Why Do I Write

Why Do I Write?
My sister asked me why I write and put me to thinking about that. Maybe it’s partly because I live alone and have no one bodily present to talk with except on Sundays when I go to two churches. Would I write less if I moved into some old folks home with more people around to talk to? Maybe. But I learned to enjoy both time and space alone at an early age on the farm as a child -- hours alone outdoors in nature with a puppy or a pony. Now I love my upstairs view across the lake keeping track of the forever-slowly-progressing bridge building. My home is a good gathering place for my Texas family for holidays and special occasions, and I like my space. It’s big enough to be a good place to walk for exercise when I can’t be outdoors. It’s boring to walk inside the house; but with too frequent air quality alerts outside, searing high temperatures, and my lung deficiencies, it’s the best place for me to walk. But I miss my walks along the lake and the golf course. I hope when it cools down I will be physically able to go back to those outdoor walks again.
So, am I lonely? Yeah, I guess to a certain degree. I’ve been living alone for nearly 16 years now since we lost Fred. My sister asked me if I was lonely when I was a young kid exploring and enjoying nature on my pony: No, I wasn’t. One doesn’t have to be lonely when alone. God -- Jesus has always been with me, especially through nature.
Am I bored? Yeah, I am. So I need a trip to the library where I may or may not find reading material that will inspire me like the prehistoric series I’ve written about. But it’s worth a try. I haven’t read the Iliad, but I’m not sure I’m smart enough to digest it. I think it’s time I get in the car and just take a drive somewhere. If I still lived in Missouri, it would be to Alley or Maramec Springs. I don’t know of any similar place close here in Texas to drive to. So I write out of boredom, out of a need to communicate with someone, from a desire to help others, a deep love of and concern for America, and I guess for the hope of being remembered well after my passing.
Am I happy? What’s the definition of happy? There are varying degrees of happiness. If it could be rated on a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being the happiest and compared with other times in my life, I guess I’d rate a 5. I am blessed in so many ways, and I thank God for that; yet I still wonder what it is He still wants me to do or learn.
Am I depressed? On the 1 to 10 scale, probably also a 5 or 6. (Medication for that would be my worst enemy! Never! It would interfere with what’s left of the mind God gave me!)
So does anything have to be wrong with me because I write? No! Writing has been lifelong for me, from a skit for a youth program at church, a mini-sermon at a church, high school and college term papers, the original-sourced masters degree papers, preparing study guides as an American history and Constitution teacher and a Sunday school teacher, to Snatches of Memory, The Enemy and the Power Within, Wake Up, Sleepy Giant! and all other shorter papers I’ve written.
I guess I really am like Holden Caufield in Catcher In The Rye, wanting to save the children (Americans) who are happily enjoying life in the rye grass (America’s freedom and plenty) from plummeting over the cliff of socialism.
I care deeply about our country and don’t want it to dissolve into a dictatorship which is where socialism would take us; so I write about that. Our Declaration of Independence and our U S Constitution based largely on our Bible are gifts from God earned for us 250 years ago by dedicated and brilliant minds and protected by past generations of heroes. I pray that the sad history of Russia, Ukraine and the other remnant nations of the USSR will not be repeated here in America, that our future generations will still be blessed with freedom, prosperity and Christianity that our Constitutional government, over which we still have power, and the economic system of free enterprise that protects not just our personal freedoms but our property rights will still prevail, not servitude to an all-powerful government over which we will have no power, and experience the poverty and servitude that socialism (Communism), always has, always will bring to the people. And radical Islam is their strange bedfellow, using Communism to help destroy us. If they succeed in getting us out of the picture, then they will go after each other. Islam is killing Christians right and left in northern Africa. We're next! It’s no good just to worry about all of this: I have to write! It’s all I can do to fight it. That and pray! We all can pray!
I don’t think enough Americans understand the magnitude of the threats! I have a cause to fight for, and writing is the main way I have to try to fight. O course that’s not my only reason for writing; but right now before the election, it sure is dominant!
I thank Ron for setting up beverlywright.me for me. I do know some local people involved in politics and have made some of my writing available for any use they can make of it. I’ve even handed out copies of some at the farmers market. And when the temperatures moderate, my declining health permitting, I will try going door to door in my neighborhood, and the next one over where Ron lives, campaigning for what could be the first of the last two meaningful American elections if the socialist Democrat Party elects enough people to Congress and the presidency.
I have causes and things I want to say. I realize most people won’t read what I write, political or otherwise. I can try to shorten it and make it more readable; but I can’t really control whether anyone reads it or not. I guess it’s probably just something I have to do for myself. I don’t have any other means of protecting present and future generations. I pray that someday, now or after my passing, something I have written or done will give value to someone. I guess, in my case: “Old soldiers never die; they just keep on writing!”
