Why Do I Write

Why Do I Write?
I’m awake. It’s 6:30 in the morning. Sometimes it’s much earlier when I wake up and I try to go back to sleep -- sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Why is it when I am older and have no job to go to, no family to get breakfast for, no pressing duties, that I can’t sleep in like I used to consider a privilege?
I guess I’ve just never learned to control my mind. I try a prayer – focus on God – silently sing The Lord’s Prayer or some other beloved hymn to myself. Sometimes when it’s 3 a.m. I give up and go to the organ, open my hymnal and play a few songs. Then I usually make it back to sleep.
But sometimes I just give up and get up. Sometimes, like this morning, I go to the computer, open up word to a blank page and start writing; or I go straight to dealing with whatever matter that had stolen its way into my mind blocking my sleep. Or I just turn on Newsmax to see what’s happening in world affairs. Or I watch a Hallmark rerun or Laramie or The Virginian old episodes again. Those heroes remind me of Fred, my hero.
That’s old age for you! So why do I write? Maybe it’s partly because I live alone and have no one bodily present to talk with except on Sundays when I go to two churches. Would I write less if I moved into some old folks home with more people around to talk to? Maybe. But I learned to enjoy both time and space at an early age on the farm as a child -- hours alone with just nature and a puppy or a pony. Now I love my upstairs view across the lake keeping track of the bridge building forever slowly progressing. My home is a good gathering place for my Texas family for holidays and special occasions, and I like my space. It’s kind of boring to walk for exercise just inside the house; but with air quality alerts outside and searing high temperatures, it’s the best place for me to walk.
So I write out of boredom, out of a need to communicate with someone, from a desire to help others, and I guess for a hope of being remembered well after my passing.
I am grateful for long life but just not sure what God wants me to do with it or learn. I know that God numbers the days He allots to each of us and gives us tasks He would like for us to complete. I care deeply about our country and I don’t want to see it dissolve into a dictatorship which is where socialism would take us; so I write about that. Our Declaration of Independence and our U S Constitution based largely on our Bible are gifts from God earned for us 250 years ago by dedicated and brilliant minds and protected by past generations of heroes. I pray that the sad history of Russia, Ukraine and the other remnant nations of the USSR will not be repeated here in America, and that our future generations will still be blessed with freedom, prosperity and Christianity that our Constitutional government over which we still have the power, and the economic system of free enterprise that protects not just our personal freedoms but also our property rights will still prevail, not servitude to an all-powerful government over which we will have no power, and experience the poverty and servitude that socialism (Communism), always has, always will bring to the people.
I thank Ron for setting up beverlywright.me for me. I do know some local people involved in politics and have made some of my writing available for any use they can make of it. I’ve even handed out copies of some at the farmers market. And when the temperatures moderate, my declining health permitting, I will try going door to door in my neighborhood, and the next one over where Ron lives, campaigning for what could be the first of the last two meaningful American elections if the socialist Democrat Party elects enough people to Congress and the presidency.
But I know people aren’t likely to read what I write, political or otherwise. So I guess it’s probably just something I have to do for myself. I pray that someday, now or after my passing, something I have written or done will be noticed and give value to someone.
